In 2009 the Industry Review’s focus is on Emerging Markets.

"An emerging market is a non-traditional region or country which could see significant fuel cell diffusion and uptake within the next five years."

The three core regions that the 2009 Review analyses are India, Latin America and the Middle East. Within this, the Review covers key drivers such as: the increase in interest in "Green Buildings" in the United Arab Emirates; the Brazilian policy requiring power and energy companies to invest a portion of revenues on cleantech R&D; the commercial need for clean, reliable distributed electricity generation in India; alongside companies investing and working in the regions. The Review starts with an update on key overarching commercialisation metrics such as industry shipments, manufacturing capability and market penetration rates followed by an overview of current government funding levels, subsidies and investor activity.

The Review also provides macro-level overviews on activity in and potential for Antarctica, China, Malaysia, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey.

The final section of the 2009 Review publishes a forecast for the period 2009-2013 for transport, stationary and portable application and breaks this information down by electrolyte and also region of adoption. This year the Review also publishes a special forecast for each of the three emerging market regions.

2008 Fuel Cell Today Industry Review

In 2008 the Industry Review’s focus is on commercialisation.

"A fuel cell is considered commercial if it is:

  • Offered for sale to the public,
  • Offered with a written warranty, supported by service capability,
  • Meets approved industry standards or is certified by an established industry body"

(Definition adopted from the US Fuel Cell Council)

The 2008 Review provides a concise and accurate summary of worldwide fuel cell activity. Alongside information on legislation, finance, applications and key fuel cell companies, the Review publishes, for the first time, the Fuel Cell Today analysts' forecasts of fuel cell shipments for the next two years. The forecasts include data by geographical region, fuel cell technology type and end use application.

According to the Review: the commercialisation of fuel cells started in 2007 and the industry saw a growth of 75% in new units delivered, with some 12,000 new fuel cell units shipped during 2007.

The last three years have seen the commercialisation of a number of fuel cell products in the luxury end of the market. Currently, fuel cells are relatively expensive and there are a number of issues still outstanding in terms of research, development and demonstration (RD&D), codes and standards, and fuel infrastructure/distribution. However, price reductions are expected as manufacturing costs fall and subsidies for adoption become available.
